AC season is upon us here in Halifax, and it’s time to consider whether your unit is in its best working condition to ensure you are comfortable in the summer months.

It is essential for you, first of all, to look at the indoor filters.  The filters inside the unit of a ductless mini split heat pump collect dirt, dust and debris in the air.  The filters work great to take these items out before they end up back in your room.  When they are dirty, however, you risk affecting airflow and being unable to get to the required temperature.

Homeowners should first remove and vacuum these filters during the first month, run them under lukewarm water, and be sure not to use soap or chemicals. Pat dry with a paper towel and put them back in place, then you will want to repeat the procedure bimonthly.

However, if you are a pet owner, we recommend checking the filters more frequently – every two weeks for a month or two, to ascertain how often you will need to clean them due to additional pet hair in the system.

In addition, you will want to take care of the outdoor unit. Remove any leaves and dirt left over from Fall and take care of weeds, grass, and other debris in the summer.

Again, if the airflow is impeded, the unit may not get to the temperature you want, and it will work harder to achieve the desired result. A caution: please do not spray with a high-pressure hose or pressure washer, which may cause damage to the outdoor coil.

We recommend a thorough clean before the summer season starts. To handle deep cleaning, please contact us at ATL REFAC. We have professional installers throughout HRM and Cape Breton.  We have special equipment and solvents to ensure your unit and coils are cleaned properly and get to the areas that surface cleaning will not address. Your heat pump can be damaged if not handled carefully with the proper methods.

With these simple steps, you will protect your unit, and it will protect you from those sweltering hot days. Enjoy your summer!
